Be Prepared In The Event Of An Accident

An accident can occur at any time and to anyone. These accidents can be devastating and can completely de-rail your entire life. You may be left dealing with serious and catastrophic injuries that could lead to a lifetime of pain and suffering and permanent disability. While you can’t predict when an accident will occur, there are steps you can take to seriously reduce the likelihood of being injured in an accident, such as seatbelts because by now we know that seatbelts and car seats really do save lives. Here are eight more safety tips that could save your life:

  1. Put Away the Cellphone – never use a cellphone while driving – even a hands-free device. Talking on the phone, texting while driving, and surfing the Internet can get you killed. In fact, distracted driving kills more than 3,400 people every single year and that number is growing. Having the cellphone nearby makes it all too tempting to pick up, especially when you hear the notifications. To avoid this temptation, consider putting it out of the way. Place your phone in the glove box, the trunk, or in your handbag until you arrive at your destination.
  2. Wear a Helmet – even if you are riding a motorcycle in a state that does not have a universal helmet law, it is wise to wear a motorcycle helmet in the event that you are involved in a motorcycle accident. Helmets can serious reduce life-threatening brain injuries. In addition, teach your children to wear a helmet when riding their bikes. Nearly 75% of all bicyclists who are injured are hospitalized for head injuries due to improper helmet use.
  3. Learn the Signs of a Concussion – hitting your head is never a good thing. Yet each year numerous concussions go unnoticed because individuals are not able to recognize the warning signs. Concussions can have long-term consequences if they are not treated quickly and properly. As such, familiarize yourself with the signs and symptoms of a concussion and take necessary medical precautions.
  4. Pay Attention when Walking – too many pedestrians are distracted while walking on sidewalks, in parking lots, and across busy streets. They may be playing on a device, multitasking on their smartphone, or talking to friends. Put the devices down and pay attention when walking. You can avoid serous pedestrian accidents, as well as minor slip and fall accidents.
  5. Watch for Weather Changes – weather can often cause serious and fatal accidents – especially when drivers are not prepared. Before you head out, check the weather in your area. If a storm is approaching or if there is bad weather headed your way, avoid going out unnecessarily. Every single year, thousands of people die in weather-related car accidents.
  6. Call a Ride – there has never been an easier time to get a ride home when you’ve been drinking. From taxicabs to ride share services like Uber and Lyft, it is always best to ride home rather than drive after a night out on the town. Never drink and drive and remember that buzzed driving is drunk driving.
  7. Prepare for the Unexpected – you never know when you will get stranded somewhere. Everyone should have an emergency kit in their vehicle to help them in virtually any type of weather. Consider packing blankets, hand warmers, de-icing solution, and a shovel in your car in cold weather. In warm weather, be sure to pack extra water, food and flashlights. Also be sure that you always carry a first aid and roadside emergency kit that includes bandages, road flares, and caution signs.
  8. Trust your Instincts – if another vehicle on the road looks unsafe or dangerous, trust your gut. Avoid driving around that vehicle and even consider pulling over until they have passed. Other drivers who are experiencing road rage or who may be driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol can cause serious and fatal accidents. Tired truck drivers are dangerous as well, so be sure to proceed with caution when around trucks that appear to be driving distracted.
