Keep Your Eyes On The Road

Distracted driving is incredibly dangerous, and caused 3,450 deaths alone in the US in 2016, as well as 391,000 injuries, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). But are drivers even aware of how distracted they can be, when they’re driving? In a recent study on how to help end distracted driving, the 2018 Travelers Risk Index, it was shown that there is a concerning detachment in the way drivers perceive their own behavior, and how they actually behave behind the wheel.

Person Texting While Driving

An overwhelming majority, 85%, of the drivers surveyed agreed that using personal technology while driving is a major risk. Yet 25% of participants who admitted that they drive while distracted believe that they can do so safely. Among those that responded to family and friend-related texts, email and calls while driving, 61% did so because they said they were concerned there might be an emergency, while 23% were afraid they might miss out on something. Regardless of the reason, there are some simple steps drivers can take to drastically reduce the amount of distraction they’re faced with while driving:

Tips To Reduce Distracted Driving

  • Store your phone out of reach, out of sight, and turn the ringer off or turn the phone off while you’re driving
  • Ask a passenger to hold your phone, and have them respond to important texts or calls if necessary
  • If you’re expecting an important call or text that cannot wait, make sure to pull over and park in a safe location before reaching for your phone
  • Don’t be a distraction for others – avoid calling or texting friends and family members when you know they’re driving
  • Pre-program your GPS and have it mounted on a dashboard mount for hands-free navigation assistance
  • Model safe driving practices for your teens, and your fellow passengers. If you’re in a vehicle being operated by a distracted driver, speak up and suggest that they put their phone away until it’s safe
  • Use the Do Not Disturb feature on your phone, or install a app that will auto-respond to texts and hold your calls until you’re no longer driving

Unfortunately, even when you take all the necessary precautions to avoid driving distracted – others may not. If you are injured in a car accident with a distracted driver, it is important to know that the law is on your side. From the moment you are injured, it is important to have an experienced car accident lawyer fighting for your rights.
