Distracted Driving Kills People Every Day

Every single day more than 10 people are killed and 1,000 people injured in distracted driving accidents in the United States. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, distracted driving fatalities are increasing faster than drunk driving, speeding, or seat belt fatalities. In addition, more than 50% of all serious teen crashes are thought to have been caused by distracted driving. But what can be done by one person to counter such a giant problem? How can you help end the distracted driving epidemic? Here are some simple things we can all do that could end up having a big effect:

Can We End Distracted Driving In 2018?

  • Ask Friends & Loved Ones to Stop – According to an AT&T study, most of us use our smartphones primarily to communicate with 5 people. Those 5 people are known as our Top 5. The study asked if drivers would reduce their texting while driving if one of their top 5 asked them to. 85% said they would stop or reduce their phone usage and 70% said they would download an app to block smartphone notifications if their loved one asked them to. Changing our driving culture in 2018 would require each of us to reflect on safety while driving and then ask our Top 5 to also eliminate their behind the wheel communications.
  • Businesses Need to Step Up Safety – In 2017, more businesses than ever before had speakers come to their offices to discuss the dangers of driving distracted with their employees. Many used educational materials, online quizzes, and adopted distracted driving policies in their own organizations. In 2018, businesses need to continue to step up safety and encourage their employees not to text and drive.
  • Get Kids Involved – Elementary and middle school programs aimed at teaching kids about the dangers of distracted driving have resulted in children helping their parents change their own driving behaviors. These kids will also grow up to be future drivers – hopefully drivers who have already learned the dangers of using their phones while driving.

Distracted driving is an epidemic in today’s fast paced and modern world. As technology increases with things such as hands free devices to prevent accidents, new distractions are being introduced. As drivers, we all need to remain aware of the dangers of taking our eyes and our attention off of the road. We should be turning off any device or hi-tech gadget that could detract us – even our onboard infotainment systems. It’s not enough to simply put down our phones – although it is a good place to start.
